Research project

Leafhopper ecology in Canadian strawberries

Description

The LeafHope grant projects will advance our understanding of leafhoppers as pests and the diseases they transmit in different crops across Canada. The projects will identify strategies to reduce the use of synthetic insecticides in light of their expanding range due to climate change. The Master's student will be tasked with assessing the biodiversity of leafhoppers in strawberry fields in Canada. This will be done by installing sticky traps in strawberry fields and identifying leafhoppers to the genus taxonomic level in the laboratory. The student will also examine the impact of climate change on leafhopper ecology and how the results can be used to improve integrated pest management.
