Research project

Neurobiology of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Frontotemporal Lobar Dementia

Description

Positions are available for outstanding students who are interested in pursuing a Master's and PhD degree in neuroscience. The major goal of my research is to determine how RNA processing is altered in ALS, and determine new therapeutic approaches to finding a cure for the disease. This will be accomplish by studying RNA-binding proteins that are mutated in ALS and assess their function. We will use new mouse models, which will develop ALS symptoms and cell culture models of ALS, to study the functions of RNA-binding proteins and the effects of therapeutics. Relevant findings will be confirmed in ALS patient samples. Findings from these studies will advance our understanding of how altered RNA regulation can cause ALS, and we will use this information to develop targeted therapeutics to cure the disease.

Research Field

Research Supervisor

Chantelle Sephton

Research Environment

CERVO Brain research centre

Dr. Chantelle Sephton is seeking to recruit highly motivated students interested in pursuing a Master's (MSc) or Doctorate (PhD) degree in her laboratory in the Integrative Neuroscience Group at the CERVO Brain Research Center at Université Laval, Quebec City, Canada, https://cervo.ulaval.ca/en/chantelle-f-sephton.

The major goals of the Sephton laboratory are to determine how processing of RNA is altered in neurodegenerative disorders, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal lobar dementia (FTLD) and to identify new therapeutic approaches to finding a cure for these diseases. The Sephton laboratory uses ALS and FTLD mouse and cell culture models to study the function of RNA-binding proteins and the efficacy of therapeutics on preventing neurodegeneration. The laboratory takes a multifaceted approach in their research employing transcriptomics, proteomics, confocal and super resolution imaging. Students can look forward to a research intense environment and access to the state-of-the-art equipment. The Sephton Laboratory is a young dynamic and multilingual team and we would like to add highly motivated individuals to the group.
