Research project

Evaluation of regionalization of perinatal health care services in Quebec

Description

The regionalization of health services, implemented in Quebec in the late 1980s, aims to provide the entire population with access to appropriate levels of service (offered by facilities) for the necessary levels of care (for patients). It relies on the rapid transfer of at-risk mothers and newborns to centers offering an appropriate level of care, in order to reduce morbidity and mortality. This system helps direct pregnant women to the place that can meet their needs, at the right time, with the right care.

However, even though these principles have been adopted provincially for several years, significant variations exist in the organization of perinatal services across Quebec. It is urgent to develop a provincial program to evaluate the regionalization and quality of perinatal health services in Quebec. The proposed project aims to 1) assess the differences between regions, and establishments of different service levels, in perinatal health outcomes, and 2) characterize the regions where the supply of perinatal health services is not in line with the needs of the population.
